This is getting tougher every week, and not in a good way.  I could have been pulling names out of a hat after 16 or so.  Having teams ranked because they blow less than other teams.... that is a major blow.  To college basketball.
Rankings for Week 11

 1. Pittsburgh            (19-1)   - I had them first last week - and defeating Syracuse is more impressive than Illinois.... sorry, OSU fans.
 2. Ohio St.              (20-0)   +2 - Very impressive indeed against Illinois - but not unbeatable. 
 3. Duke                  (18-1)   - Do many people really do think that San Diego State is better?  Do they have Coach K?
 4. San Diego St.         (20-0)   +2 - Continues to win... but I am not convinced they belong this high.  They are here because everyone else is inconsistent.
 5. Texas                 (16-3)   +6 - Impressive road win over Kansas this week. Apart from a one point loss to Connecticut, they have been piling on the wins since early December, and many of them were against top 30 teams.
 6. Kansas                (18-1)   -1 - Gotta move them below Texas if they end up next to each other...
 7. Brigham Young         (19-1)   - Piling on the wins... but... MWC is a lot weaker than other conferences (apart from the top 3).
 8. Connecticut           (16-2)   - One of the most impressive records in the very tough Big East.
 9. Villanova             (17-2)   - Falls to Connecticut on the road but rebounds with a great road win at Syracuse.
10. Syracuse              (18-2)   -8 - Two tough losses to very good teams this week.
11. Purdue                (17-3)   +5 - Nice win over Michigan State.
12. Wisconsin             (15-4)   +3 - Solid team, solid wins.
13. Texas A&M             (16-2)   -1
14. Missouri              (17-3)   -1
15. Notre Dame            (16-4)   +3
16. Kentucky              (15-4)   -6
17. Washington            (15-4)   +5

19. Illinois              (14-6)   +1 - Couldn't pull it out against Ohio State; but showed that can play well even if McCamey has an off night. Oh, yeah, and beat Michigan State, too, this week.
20. West Virginia         (13-5)   -6 - Eenie, meanie, mini, moo, are we beating Purdue this week or losing to Marshall?
21. Vanderbilt            (14-4)  New - Could be pulling the names out of a hat after this.  They have better numbers than many others...
22. Georgetown            (14-5)   +2 - Georgetown is totally overrated.  But there is no one else to rate here
23. Cincinnati            (17-3)  New
24. Arizona               (16-4)  New
25. Louisville            (15-4)   -8 - Sad week when you lose to Providence but still stay in the rankings.

Next Ten:
26. Virginia Tech         (13-5)  +12 - Putting together a nice string of wins
27. Florida St.           (15-5)  +20 - they beat Duke, hello! And some of the better teams in the ACC (which is't much this year, but hey, you gotta play your schedule.)
28. Michigan St.          (12-7)   -9 - They are playing good teams... and... losing to them.  This ain't looking like a Final Four team to me, no matter what Gary Parrish says.
29. Nevada Las Vegas      (15-5)   -4 - Come on now, Colorado State, at home, by 15?
30. Marquette             (13-7)   +1
31. Florida               (15-4)   +2
32. North Carolina        (13-5)   -2

So tough to rank this week!  So many cross-beatings... I should drop Duke because losing to South Florida is not #1-like behavior... but really tehre isn't a good substitute. I am going with Pitt because I think they are the best of the rest. Ohio state and Kansas has not played a good enough schedule.  The only other candidate who has beatn someone is Syracuse, and I think Pitt is better.

It gets really difficult to rank when just when you think a team is good, they lose... and you end up ranking teams you don't think are that great but they have less losses or not so bad ones.  Eh. 



Rankings for Week 9

 1. Duke                  (15-0)   - Maryland challenged them but they took care of business. 
 2. Syracuse              (16-0)   - Haven't lost yet and the schedule has been challenging - with a couple very good wins.
 3. Pittsburgh            (15-1)   +1 - The most impressive looking from the rest.
 4. Ohio St.              (16-0)   +2 - Did not look like a top 10 team against Minnesota.  Lack of competition played is showing and they still have not yet played the cream of the crop in the Big Ten.
 5. Kansas                (15-0)   -2 - An almost loss to Michigan....
 6. Notre Dame            (14-2)   +9 - Do I think they are this good? No.  But they have beaten some really good teams, and recently.
 7. Villanova             (14-1)   - Finally playing some good competition.
 8. Purdue                (15-1)   +3 - They look crisp, but have yet to play the top of the conference, just like OSU.
 9. Brigham Young         (16-1)   +4 - UNLV in the scalp.
10. Kentucky              (12-3)   -5 - A loss to Georgia on the road in conference play is just a wrinkle in an otherwise good resume. Georgia is always a tough matchup for Kentucky with their big guys.
11. San Diego St.         (17-0)   -3 - They gotta beat UNLV to get a top win and continue hanging out in the top 10.
12. Connecticut           (12-2)   +5 - They lost one and won one on the road, both were good teams, that's better than many have done this week.  I think they are an easy-to-counter one-trick-pony, but that pony is awfully skilled.
13. Texas                 (12-3)   -1 - One point loss to Connecticut moves them one spot below them.
14. Missouri              (14-2)   -5 - Losing on the road this week in conference play.
15. Illinois              (13-3)   +4 - The Illini have shot a school record 70.5% against Northwestern.  For the first time, they put a team away after leading with double digits.  Did you know that: a.) Illinois is the tallest team in the nation b.) contrary to popular belief, it is only 239th in the nation in % of 3 point shots attempted?  They look like a three-point shooting team because they make them.  But they only take them when they get an open look.
16. Wisconsin             (12-3)   -2 - Bo Ryan's team is perenially underrated.
17. Georgetown            (12-4)   -7 - Two losses in a row.... one day they look great, the next day they look like they took a sleeping pill and never woken up from it.
18. Texas A&M             (13-1)   -2
19. Louisville            (13-2)   +3
20. Temple                (11-3)   -2
21. Gonzaga               (11-5)  New - Played one of the toughest schedules in the country, and won their last seven.
22. Washington            (12-3)  New - Lands here due to lack of bad losses, and no recent losses - and a high Pomeroy rating.  Slim pickings...
23. Nevada Las Vegas      (13-3)   - I think they are better than this, but htey lost to BYU at home this week.
24. Vanderbilt            (11-3)   -4 - Road loss this week....
25. Cincinnati            (15-1)  New - I know, I added them after a loss to Nova.  But... losing to Nova is better than what many others did this week. I don't think they are this good.  But the other choices are worse.

Next Ten:
26. West Virginia         (10-4)   +3 - Beating Georgetown at home would move them into the rankings... but... the two-loss last week is too recent.
27. Florida               (12-3)   -1 - Beating some-mid-level competition, but loss to Jacksonville is too recent and no good wins to make up for it.
28. North Carolina        (11-4)   - Have handled all the "gimme"s by far.  Virginia Tech this week should be telling.
29. Arizona               (14-3)   +6 - Two nice wins over Stanford and California this week.  Losing to Oregon State on the road is conference play; but no good wins to compensate.
30. Maryland              (10-5)   +7 - Played Duke tough and looked good doing it.
31. Michigan St.          (10-5)   -6 - Losing to Penn State on the road... who do you think you are... last year's Illinois team?
32. Central Florida       (14-1)  -11 - Finally a reason to drop them from my top 25.  Thank you, Houston.
33. Oklahoma St.          (13-2)   - This team has beaten a good number of top 30-50-ish teams.  Watch out.
34. Boston College        (12-4)   -4 - Schizo team.... looked great then started losing to teams barely in the top 100.
35. Kansas St.            (12-4)   -3 - Can you say "downward spiral"?  Who do you think you are... Tennessee?

Nuts, just nuts.  I am starting to think the smart schools don't play during finals week for a reason.  So many top teams just didn't show up for their games.

Worst loss of the week belongs to Illinois for completely not showing up at the game against UIC, but Tennessee takes the cake for worst back-to-back losses with Oakland and Charlotte.  And here I was ranking them at #4 last week. Way to make me look stupid, Vols!

UNLV has back-to-back losses now, too, but at least one was to a ranked team.

Louisville's loss to Drexel seems downright respectable in this context, although I caution those who ranked Drexel that a #83 Pomeroy rating is NOT a top 25 number.  I have not seen the game but it sounded to me that it wasn't Drexel who played a great game, but Louisville played a poor one.

 2. Kansas                (10-0)   - Close shave with Southern California, who played a tough game.  But they escaped, unlike many others.

 5. Pittsburgh            (11-1)   +3
 6. Kentucky              (8-2)    - One of the best resumes in the country, no bad losses. Plus they have Terrence Jones.

 8. San Diego St.         (12-0)   +4 - Keeps rolling
 9. Georgetown            (10-1)   +6 - Rare dominance on display dispatching Loyola MD.
10. Villanova             (9-1)    +6 - Rolls over Delaware.
11. Purdue                (10-1)   +6 - Just keeps hanging in there - one of several teams to move up because of the losses

14. Brigham Young         (10-1)   -4 - Played a tough game at UCLA.  UCLA was overdue for a win at home.

16. Florida               (8-2)   New - Shellacked Kansas State - proving the pre-season hype was warranted. With Central Florida moving into most polls, their losses are downright respectable. 
17. Kansas St.            (9-2)   -10 - Breakdown game, but Florida is not UIC or Charlotte.
18. Texas A&M             (9-1)    +3 - Moves up a few spots because others falling.
19. Temple                (8-2)    +3
20. Baylor                (7-1)    +3 - Not moving them up - they just fall less than the other teams.  Good game against the Zags, but the soft schedule by far hurt them, and the Zags came ready to play.
21. Texas                 (9-2)   New - Beating North Carolina doesn't look as good as in other years, but certainly looks great if you add that they did not lose to UIC, Drexel, Charlotte or Santa Barbara.
22. Boston College        (9-2)    +2 - Moving up due to others falling
23. Notre Dame            (10-1)   +2
24. West Virginia         (8-2)   New - A good team that keeps piling on the wins. Losses to Minny and Miami are not bad.
25. Vanderbilt            (8-2)   New - Solid borderline team that keeps falling in and out of my rankings, depending on how the others do.

Next Ten:
26. Louisville            (9-1)   -13 - Victim of finals week. I am not sold on Louisville, I think the UNLV game was sloppy and more due to UNLV playing tired than Louisville playing well. Losing to Drexel doesn't make me confident that this team is for real.
27. Nevada Las Vegas      (10-2)  -13 - Never underestimate someone named Barbara.
28. Tennessee             (7-2)   -24 - Oakland is a good team, no shame in that.  But losing to Charlotte makes it back-to-back losses and you don't stay ranked with that performance.
29. Central Florida       (10-0)   +3 - Quietly piling up the wins.  Beating Miami was a big resume builder. However I am not convinced yet that they can run with the big boys.
30. Illinois              (10-2)  -21 - Absolutely inexcusable, atrocious play nets Illinois the worst loss of the week.  If that attitude is not fixed soon, Illinois can kiss the season bye-bye.
31. Arizona               (10-2)   +6 - Needs a few more wins to convince me.
32. Oklahoma St.          (10-1)   +7 - Quietly building a resume.
33. North Carolina        (7-4)    -6 - Bumpy ride.  I am not convinced they will be ranked this year again.
34. Minnesota             (10-1)   -6 - Pomeroy rating of 52 is worrisome.
35. Memphis               (8-1)    -6 - What have you done for me lately?

Rankings for Week 5

 1. Duke                  (10-0)   - Duke doesn't make mistakes - and use every mistake the opponent makes.
 2. Kansas                (9-0)    +1 - Impressive win against Memphis, but 22 turnovers?  When they learn to take care of the ball, they will be unstoppable.
 3. Syracuse              (10-0)   +9 - Syracuse plays the tightest zone in the nation and are very strong getting to the basket.  Michigan State had no answer to them.
 4. Tennessee             (7-0)    +9 - Flat outplayed, outhustled, outdefended Pitt at their almost home.  They are probably the hardest playing team in the nation at the moment, add an impressive firepower from three and aggressiveness getting to the basket, and
 5. Ohio St.              (8-0)    -1 - The good news this week: Ohio State gets 40 from Sullinger against IUPUI - best for a freshman for OSU, ever.  Bad news this week: Ohio State needs 40 from Sullinger to put away IUPUI.  They will be sinking in my rankings as long as the soft schedule continues.
 6. Kentucky              (7-2)    +1 - Ran circles around the big, more experienced Notre Dame guys.  Indiana gave them a run but they couldn't win against this talented squad. 
 7. Kansas St.            (9-1)    -2 - Have not seen them yet - soft schedule drops them.
 8. Pittsburgh            (10-1)   -6 - Tennessee left them standing, literally.
 9. Illinois              (10-1)   - A team stacked with long, skilled scorers that are dangerous from anywhere on the floor, one of the longest, most talented benches in the nation.  They just need to learn how to defend the paint because right now grandfather snails can find big, gaping holes... and get rebounds, too.
10. Brigham Young         (10-0)   +4 - Nice win this week against Arizona. 
11. Connecticut           (8-0)    - - Sitting on their early-November laurels.
12. San Diego St.         (10-0)   +4 - Slowly compiling an impressive set of wins over good teams.
13. Louisville            (8-0)   New - The test against UNLV came out positive.  A bit sloppy and chaotic, but Pitino will clean them up before the season ends.
14. Nevada Las Vegas      (9-1)    -6 - Loses the battle of mirroring styles at Louisville in a close game, but this seems to be a road game hickup only. After all, UNLV returns ALL FIVE STARTERS!!!!
15. Georgetown            (9-1)    -5 - Lackluster performance at Temple.
16. Villanova             (8-1)    -1 - La Salle win is too close for comfort, no signature win yet.
17. Purdue                (9-1)    +1 - Just kinda hanging out at this spot.
18. Michigan St.          (7-3)   -12 - Looking like timid bunnies at Syracuse (one 'Cuse foul in first half? Really?) - then barely eek out a win against Oakland at home.  Izzo will get this team tournament ready by March - but as of right now, the Spartans need to work on aggressiveness - and turnovers.
19. Wisconsin             (8-2)   New - Quietly putting together a nice resume, dispatching Marguette this week.  Pomeroy rates them at 8... Leuer is coming through.
20. Missouri              (8-1)   New - They take a close one against Vandy at home in a very good game.
21. Texas A&M             (8-1)   New - Deafeats Washington - and all of a sudden that early win over surging Temple looks very good, and the loss to Boston College a lot less bad.
22. Temple                (7-2)   New - Flat outplay Georgetown at home, add another impressive win to the win over Maryland. Loss to Texas A&M looks a lot better, too.
23. Baylor                (6-0)    - When are they going to play SOMEONE?
24. Boston College        (8-2)   New - If I rank Texas A&M, I must rank Boston College, too.  They quietly are amassing a list of wins over good teams, last over Maryland in a squeaker.  I am willing to write off the early Yale loss to not being quite ready to play yet.
25. Notre Dame            (9-1)    - Stumbles against a talented Kentucky but rebounds against Gonzaga.

Next Ten:
26. Vanderbilt            (7-2)    -9 - I am impressed with Vandy but with all the teams wanting into my top 25 this week, I couldn't find a spot for a team that lost this week.
27. North Carolina        (7-3)    -3 - UNC is borderline and will probably fall in and out of my rankings, depending on what other teams do.
28. Minnesota             (9-1)    -7 - Same as above.
29. Memphis               (7-1)   -10 - Losing to Kansas is not a reason to fall out of the rankings, but they don't have a good win on the resume and too many other teams are wanting in.
30. Washington St.        (6-1)   New - Beats Gonzaga this week.  Only loss to Kansas State.
31. Texas                 (7-2)    -5 - Slow week drops them
32. Central Florida       (8-0)    -2 - For the first time in a long time, Memphis will have to fight for the C-USA championship.
33. Washington            (6-3)   -13 - Three losses to three good teams... but... I need to see a good win to keep them in the rankings.
34. Florida               (7-2)    -3 No signature win yet.
35. West Virginia         (6-2)    -6 I expect them to perform better during the season.

I am going to start pubishing my weekly rankings on my blog.  We have been having a lot of games and I can now say that I put enough effort into my rankings.

I have a somewhat unorthodox way of doing the rankings - your results matter most.  However, early in the season, when teams play differing schedules, preseason expectations and my personal judgment on which team looks better plays a bigger role. The more games played, the more purely results-oriented the rankings will become.

Decided not to change my top 3.  There is the overall body of work to be considered for the last ranking of the year and Louisville was playing very well that night.  Kansas State does deserve a drop for going on a skid - Kansas is no biggie, but Iowa State? West Virginia, Baylor and Texas A&M get a boost for a strong finish, which drops New Mexico - no grudge here against New Mexico and Pittsburgh, just needed to reward those three teams and someone had to drop.  'Nova drops a game - again - and three spots. Maryland and Wisconsin are also strong finishers.  Temple is back into the rankings on the virtue of the other teams below them losing or playing weaker teams.

This is a correctional poll. Since teams have been beating each other left and right, I decided that moving them up and down based on what they did last week resulted in a non-sense ranking - so I just re-did it instead.  That said, most movements did work out to correspond to results (I guess my old poll wasn't that bad). 

Kansas: I went with the "it is just one game" approach.  They lost a conference game on the road to my #22.  They are still #1 in my ratings.  I still think they are better than 'Cuse. 

Syracuse's dominance over 'Nova validated two things for me - one, that 'Cuse is one of the top two teams in the country, and secondly, that Villanova was overrated. 

Kentucky: I went with the "this loss verifies my score ratings" approach.... so they are at #5. 

Purdue was playing witb so much efficiency and poise, I thought they were going to the Final Four.  The loss to Michigan State showed how much Hummel meant to this team.  A real bummer for the Boilers.

Maryland:  Maryland is quietly becoming the team that was ranked pre-season.  I am told I missed a great double overtime showdown between VT and Maryland where Vasquez showed off his dominance.
